Busy weekend + Running for State Central Committee
There are lots of important events going on this weekend! First is our fourth Retire Jim Moran Weekend, which you can read about here. We will meet at the King Street Metro parking lot on Saturday, October 16. TIME CHANGE: We will meet at 11:00 am instead of 10:00 am to accommodate those attending the FCRC breakfast.
The Fairfax County Republican Committee “Pancakes and Politics” Rally Breakfast is on Saturday from 8:30-10:30 am. This is one of the most exciting GOP events in Northern Virginia; last year, an overflow crowd heard Bob McDonnell speak, and this year’s promises to be just as exciting, with featured guests including former Gov. George Allen, Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates Bill Howell, and several elected Republicans from throughout the state.
The breakfast will be held at the Fairfax City Fire Station #3, 4081 University Drive in Fairfax. Tickets are $35/person, $50/couple, $100/family, or $20/student. Sponsorships are available at $250 and $500. Proceeds will benefit the FCRC’s 2010 election efforts to support our own Patrick Murray, the 11th District’s Keith Fimian, and the 10th District’s Rep. Frank Wolf. Dress is casual. You can stick around afterwards to volunteer with the FCRC’s door-to-door and phone banking efforts. More details are available here at the FCRC website.
The Arlington GOP county-wide lit drop is also this weekend. To volunteer, contact precincts@arlingtongop.org.
Finally, be sure to check out our Upcoming Events and Volunteer pages, both of which are updated every Monday, for more great GOP events throughout the 8th District and Northern Virginia!

As many of you know, Vellie Dietrich-Hall, one of the three 8th District representatives on the State Central Committee (SCC), has relocated to Farmville (in the 5th District) and has resigned her seat on the SCC. Vellie was a fantastic member of the SCC, a leader in our outreach efforts, and she will definitely be missed in the 8th District. She’s staying very active, though, and has already gotten involved in the very important 5th District race. Thanks to Vellie for her tremendous service to the 8th District and the Virginia GOP.
The 8th District Committee has finalized the process for filling the vacancy on the SCC. The process will be as follows:
Individuals interested in being candidates for the vacant 8th District SCC seat must submit a statement of candidacy to the District Chairman, Mike Ginsberg, by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 29. Submissions may be made by e-mail to va8gopchairman@hotmail.com or in hard copy by U.S. Mail or courier to Mike Ginsberg, 8th District Chairman, 1276 N. Wayne St. #408, Arlington, VA 22201.
Candidates will be invited to address the 8th District Committee at its next meeting, on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 2 p.m., to be held at the Community Room of the Williamsburg Condominium, 1276 N. Wayne St. #408, Arlington, VA 22201. The time allotted will depend on the number of candidates, but will likely be 3-5 minutes. Immediately thereafter, the committee will vote by secret ballot to determine the new SCC member. The new member will immediately take office and will represent the 8th District at the next State Central Committee meeting on Saturday, November 20 (at the RPV Advance).
If you have questions, please contact Mike Ginsberg at va8gopchairman@hotmail.com.

Moran to Troops: Your Service Doesn’t Matter

The Washington Examiner reports that Virginia congressman Jim Moran (VA-8) was videotaped speaking at an October 6th meeting of the Arlington County Democratic Committee, saying: “What [Republicans] do is find candidates, usually stealth candidates, that haven’t been in office, haven’t served or performed in any kind of public service. My opponent is typical, frankly.”
But as the Examiner points out, Moran’s opponent “happens to be Col. Patrick Murray (US Army-Ret.), who served 24 years in uniform, was deployed to four different combat zones, including Baghdad, as part of the 2007 troop surge under Gen. David Petraeus, and was even shot at by foreign combatants.”
Jim Moran is well known to be an arrogant, unpleasant, and self-important man. He’s been protected from paying any price for his defects of character by having a safely Democratic Northern Virginia seat, one that’s heavily populated by federal government workers and others friendly to big government. But for many decent liberals, this comment could be the straw that breaks the back of their willingness to continue voting for Moran.
If Moran’s constituents learn about his remarks.
If donors step up, and if GOP leaders and committees and independent groups come forward to support the troops and do a good deed for the country–and if there are therefore resources for TV, radio and mail making Moran’s slander as infamous as it deserves to be–then we can look forward to lifting a glass to our troops as we bid farewell on Nov. 2 to Jim Moran.
