2020 Convention

The 2020 8th District Republican Convention
will be held on

Saturday, May 30th
10:00 AM
The Waterford at Springfield
6715 Commerce Street, Springfield, Virginia

for the following purposes:

  • Nominating our Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 8th District;
  • Electing three delegates and three alternate delegates to represent the 8th District at the 2020 Republican National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina;
  • Electing three members to the State Central Committee (the Republican Party of Virginia’s governing body);
  • Nominating a Presidential Elector to cast one of Virginia’s 13 votes in the 2020 Electoral College if the Republican nominee wins Virginia;
  • Electing a Chairman of the 8th District Republican Committee to a new two-year term;
  • and other purposes that may come before the convention.

Attending the Convention

Time

Doors will open at 8:00 am. You must be checked in (or in line to check in) by 10:00 am sharp or you will not be permitted to vote.


Eligibility

The Convention is open to the public, but only legal and qualified voters in the 8th District who are in accord with the principles of the Republican Party and are willing to express their intent to vote for our nominees in November are eligible to vote. Absentee voting is not permitted under party rules except for active-duty military members.


Filing Fee

There is a $25 filing fee if you want to vote in the intra-party races listed above (delegates, State Central Committee members, elector, chairman). If you only want to vote in the House of Representatives nomination, there is no fee, but you will not be eligible to vote in the other races.


Registration

Under Republican Party of Virginia rules, you must register through your county/city Republican committee to vote at the convention as follows below. The deadlines are strict and are set by each city/county committee in accordance with party rules.


Alexandria City Residents

The deadline for Alexandria City residents passed on March 1st. The convention is public and Alexandria residents are welcome to attend, but you may not vote unless you duly registered by the deadline.


Arlington County Residents

Registration details will be published here once they are available.


Fairfax County Residents

The deadline for Fairfax County residents passed on February 22nd. The convention is public and Fairfax County residents are welcome to attend, but you may not vote unless you duly registered by the deadline.


Falls Church City Residents

Registration details will be published here once they are available.

Rules Recommendations

The District Committee will recommend to the Convention Rules Committee that it propose the following rules to the convention (a) no resolutions will be considered; (b) the election for delegate and alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention shall be by one ballot with the top three finishers being named delegate and the next three named alternate delegate, and each delegate to the 8th District Convention will be able to cast up to six (6) votes; and (c) election for U.S. House be by majority vote.
