Update 11:19 am — See information about victory parties at the bottom of this post.

The nation is watching what we do here in Virginia. The Washington Post said on Sunday that Virginia may be the most hotly contested battleground state in 2010 after it went blue in 2008 but has swung back to red in 2009 and 2010. We need to take just two Senate seats to regain control of the state Senate. We can increase our majority in the House of Delegates. And we can put Republicans in local offices across the district – we have great shots at offices that haven’t been held by a Republican in decades. Given those stakes and the low voter turnout for state elections, your vote really does count. If you don’t know the candidates, please look at our list of candidates who are running within the 8th District at the 2011 Elections page. The ballot will not list the party of candidates for certain local offices as per state law, so please be sure to know who our Republican candidates are!

The campaigns and our county/city committees need help handing out absentee ballots outside the polls. This is a very important task because for offices such as school board, clerk, sheriff, etc., there is no (R) or (D) next to the candidate’s name. If people want to vote Republican for an office, the sample ballot shows them which candidate is Republican. You can go vote and then stay for awhile to hand out ballots, or spare an hour or two before or after work, or whenever you are available. If you want to help at a polling place, contact the county/city committee of the polling place(s) you can help at:

Alexandria City GOP: 703-951-7370 or precincts@alexgop.org
Arlington County GOP: 703-685-2488 or precincts@arlingtongop.org
Fairfax County GOP: 703-766-4467 or info@fairfaxgop.com
Falls Church GOP: chairman@fallschurchgop.org

Also, the Fairfax County GOP is hosting a phone bank all day from 8:30 am to 6:45 pm at their headquarters at 4246 Chain Bridge Road in Fairfax (map). Ken Cuccinelli will be there to greet volunteers at 9:30 am, and George Allen will be there to greet volunteers at 3:00 pm. The Alexandria GOP is also hosting a phone bank at the Marston for Clerk headquarters at 206 North Washington St., basement level, in Alexandria (map) from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Volunteers are all the more important for this election because the low amount of attention to these critical races makes it tough to recruit volunteers, so if you can stop in to either phone bank your help is much appreciated.

Live results of the elections will be on the Virginia State Board of Elections website here. The first results will appear starting about 10-20 minutes after the polls close at 7:00 pm.

The Fairfax County GOP Election Night Victory Party will be at the Fairview Park Marriott, 3111 Fairview Park Drive in Falls Church (map), from 7:30-10:00 pm.

The Arlington GOP Election Night Victory Party will be at Hard Times Cafe, 3028 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington (map; convenient to Clarendon Metro on the Orange Line), from 7:00-10:00 pm.

The Chris Marston for Clerk Election Night Victory Party will be at the home of Chris Marston’s sister, 917 Saint Stephens Road in Alexandria (map).
